Cuesta College Courses
Geology of California
Introduces the principles of geology and the tectonic/geologic evolution of California. Emphasizes the processes responsible for shaping the environment including seismology, volcanology, the fossil record, and the mineral/energy resources of the state.
Environmental Geology
Studies aspects of geology as they relate to human interaction with the environment. Addresses relevant geological aspects of the environment and the problems caused by humans as they use the earth and its resources. Investigates geological processes including earthquakes, volcanoes, mass movements, foods, groundwater and climate change. Emphasis on geological viewpoints concerning waste disposal, pollution, energy resources, and mining. Lectures include strategies for mitigating these issues.

UCSB Courses
Antarctica – the Last Place on Earth
This course offers a broad introduction to Antarctica—the interrelations of the physical and biological environments on the continent Antarctica. The curriculum includes studies of polar climate, ocean circulation, tectonic history, geology, global warming/climate change, glaciology, and the history of scientific exploration of the continent. |
Summer Field Geological Mapping
Students spend three weeks mapping on Santa Cruz Island, CA, towards preparation of geologic maps, sections, and professional reports. This course provides an intensive hands-on training in the collection, interpretation, and presentation of geologic field data that is critical to the development and education of a geologist. In particular, summer field geology refines a student's ability to identify and describe rocks, determine their field relationships, identify and infer structural features, and interpret depositional environments.

Mountains, Boots, and Backpacks
This 10 day introductory field based course exposes young college students (primarily freshmen and sophomores) to various aspects of Earth Science. In particular, students explore the natural laboratory of the eastern Sierra by mapping ancient glacial moraines, observing various volcanic deposits, visiting the oldest living thing on Earth, identifying and mapping faults, and learning the wonders of Yosemite granite. Our hope is that students will never look at a landscape or rock the same. |
Geologic Catastrophes
Course deals with geologic catastrophes, e.g., earthquakes, vocanic eruptions, tsunamis, and landslides. Students will learn the basic physical causes of these naturally occurring events and discuss the consequences.
